1.) Friends
Whoops. I forgot to blog. Here’s a scatter-brained update:
Life here has pretty busy. I’ve been going to the market almost everyday now and doing CIF work in between. I’ve met a lot of people and I started going to Chinese church on Sundays. I can’t understand a thing but it gives me an opportunity to meet people and build relationships. The Chinese get so much more...

Today I met two Chinese girls who knew a little English (one more than the other). One of the girls has a cool story. She was born in Cambodia but her family fled the country during the Khmer Rouge when she was a baby. So she grew up in Taiwan and moved to Los Angeles to go to college. Now she is back in Cambodia to be a missionary to “her people.” I think that’s really cool.
It...

Don’t even worry about it, but I ate a tarantula.
Another day at language school. Today my tutor made me have three conversations with three poor souls. Aside from calling a man “madam” and making a fool of myself with excessive stuttering, I did OK. By the third person, I was able to hold a basic conversation without much awkwardness. Here are some of the things I am able to ask about/answer:
1. How are you? 2. What’s your...
If a baby can do it, so can I. (PART TWO)
It’s because of conversations like the one below that I’ve developed a fear of talking to people. I say “Suesday” because it’s the only word I know, and immediately Khmer people are like “Oh! You’re white and you know Khmer! Blah blah blah blah blah!”
Huh, what’s that? Ok, just nod my head. Yep. Then they realize I don’t understand and...
If a baby can do it, so can I.
Today I had the least intelligent conversation of my life.
ME: Suesday. Knyom, som ot nyea Khmer. (Hello, I’m practicing Khmer.)
CHINESE WOMAN: ??
JOHN: *annunciates to me* Hot Nee- YAY
ME: Kyom, some hot neeyay Khmer. (I’m practicing Khmer.)
CHINESE WOMAN: *smiles and says something to John*
JOHN: Ok, go.
ME: Chuhmuh eh. (What’s your name?)
WOMAN: *tells me her name...
Check, please!
*Caution: This post is for serious blog readers/followers only.*
Today, I rode side saddle on the back of a moto. I’m not bragging, but it requires more skill than just sitting. We went to Oressey (the Chinese market). This gave me an opportunity to see where John and Dale work everyday, and also to practice my (practically nonexistent) Khmer. We prayer walked (which was a first for me) and...

SihanoukVille
I’m back from a great first week in Cambodia. We went to the sea with some missionaries from Holland. It gave me a chance to get to know everyone. I think I’ll just make a list in order of what happened once we got there.
1.) Apparently Osama Bin Laden died.
2.) I ate barracuda.
3.) I got a “fish massage”. It feels how it sounds.
4.) I swam in coral.
5.) I caught a...

Hillside Car Karma
My roommate and I often joke around about how missionaries have some sort of curse when it comes to cars. I’ve come to realize that it’s not a joke. It’s real. Let me present the evidence.
April 2nd. I came home to visit my family for Easter and found my car completely immobile. My options were: 1.) junk it and get paid $250 or 2.) fix it and sell it for a little more. So, I...

The Very Worst Missionary →
Today, my awesome friend, Di, recommended me this blog called “The Very Worst Missionary.” She told me that she read through the entire archive (months and months worth) in one sitting. And I’m on my way to doing the same thing. I’m pretty sure it’s the only place on the entire world wide web where you can read about encouraging scripture and PMS cravings in the same...

If I Had A Million Dollars?
It’s Friday…which means… Mega Millions. Today every one at the missions office bought tickets in hopes of finally being able to pay bills, afford airfare, have more opportunities to travel, support our friends, and buy new shoes. Even though we all know that it is likely none of us will actually win, it’s fun to talk about what we would do if we did. Personally, I would 1.)...

Dreaming of Montreal
I have this “spiritual” connection with Montreal. Both of my grandparents on my mom’s side (Nana and Papa) were born there and my Papa and his siblings grew up in a convent there. (Side note: I have this awesome old, old, old polaroid of nuns in Montreal passed down from them.) My childhood is flooded with memories of my Nana going off on French tangents seasoned with French...

Plane tickets, Fashion, Food reviews, and Film...
Things on my mind:
1. Mallory made salted, dark chocolate, caramel filled, GF cupcakes. They were the best.
2. Last night we cooked for over three hours and with combined effort the product was: ribs, sausage risotto, potato/asparagus/roasted pepper salad, cole slaw, fresh bread, and apple pie. Yum.
3. Today the prices of airfare went down a little. Here’s hoping to a little more!

Double dog dare?
People will do anything… for a price. Yes, it has come to this. I am taking dares to fundraise for my trip to Cambodia. Hillside has made me strong. I’ve eaten frog legs, spam, sardines, spicy peppers, and others. I’ve had multiple practical jokes played on me. Name your dare and the price you’d pay. I’ll video record and post them. All dares welcome.

One of my favorite bloggers (from Brooklyn) recently mentioned little ol’ Richmond in her blog. I’ve been religiously following her blog since before I’d moved here, so it was a surprise. Also, I’m embarrassed that she knew the story behind the tent city and I didn’t.
“Yesterday I met some really awesome people from Richmond, VA and they told me a story that I...
