Check, please!

Today, I rode side saddle on the back of a moto. I’m not bragging, but it requires more skill than just sitting. We went to Oressey (the Chinese market). This gave me an opportunity to see where John and Dale work everyday, and also to practice my (practically nonexistent) Khmer. We prayer walked (which was a first for me) and prayed with a Chinese woman who invited us into her house for water. The market is extremely hot and stuffy and I’m pretty sure the smell of fish is seaping from my pores right now, but I don’t care. Afterwards we ordered Khmer style coffee and I asked for the check in Khmer. Wait, let me just say that again in case you weren’t paying attention. I asked… for the check….in KHMER. It was the first time I used Khmer with someone who’s not in the family. Dale said my pronunciation was flawless. The waitress was pretty surprised too. It was a great moment. I think the most confusing thing to remember is what title to call a person. Depending on their age, a person is either older sister/brother, younger sister/brother, uncle, aunt, grandma, grandpa, sir, madam, or teacher. You don’t use anyone’s name, which is actually kind of nice, haha. Anyways, I just wanted to write about my language accomplishment, and how great the market was, and how delicious my 50 cent Khmer iced coffee was. Tomorrow is the King’s birthday so everything is shut down for the weekend to celebrate.
Other things that happened today: taught 2nd art class, saw a rat, saw a monkey casually walking down the sidewalk, dropped of my passport for a visa extension, found a market that is the motherland of all American brand cereals, AND, OH, did I mentioned I asked for the check in Khmer?
